The Collection of Laments

The Collection of Laments (Psalms 3-10) is a group of eight Psalms that follow the introduction of Psalms 1 and 2. These Psalms of lament present the voice of a believer in the midst of trials and distress. The Psalmist is surrounded by “foes” (Psalm 3) and he is “moaning” (Psalm 6) and in “affliction” (Psalm 9) as the Lord seems far away (Psalm 10). But he looks to the Lord in faith, offering prayers for deliverance.

Note that some commentators do not consider Psalm 8 a Psalm of lament. However, Psalm 8:4 is a melancholy question (“What is man that you are mindful of him and the son of man that you care for him?”) that merits its inclusion in this Collection of Laments.

Text adapted from 150 Questions about the Psalter by Bradley Johnston.
